Philip Douglas Taylor is a former English professional darts player widely regarded as the greatest darts player of all time. Nicknamed The Power, he dominated darts for over two decades, winning professional tournaments, including a record number of major titles and a record number of World Championships. In 2015, the BBC ranked Taylor among the top ten greatest British sportsmen of the last 35 years.

Triumphs and Records

Taylor won eight consecutive World Championships from 1995 to 2002, reached 14 consecutive finals from 1994 to 2007, and competed in a total of world finals, all of which are records. He held the world number one ranking for thirteen years in total, including eight consecutive years from 2006 to 2013. He won PDC Pro Tour events, a record until Michael van Gerwen surpassed it in February 2019. Taylor threw a record number of televised nine-dart finishes and in total. He was also the first person to hit two nine-darters in the same match.

A Pioneer and Unforgettable Achievements

Taylor competed in competitions organized by the British Darts Organisation (BDO) until 1993. Amidst growing dissatisfaction with the BDO, he was one of the top players who broke away to form their own organization, the World Darts Council, now known as the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). He won the PDC Player of the Year Award six times and was twice nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. In the latter event, he finished second, making him the only darts player to ever finish in the top two. He was inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame. Taylor retired after the 2018 World Championship. In 2022, he participated in the inaugural 2022 World Seniors Darts Championship and lost in the quarter-finals.
