Darryl Fitton: The Darts Journey of "The Dazzler"

Darryl Fitton, born on May 5, 1962, in Stockport, is a renowned English darts player who has made his mark in the world of darts, particularly in the British Darts Organisation (BDO). Widely known as "The Dazzler," Fitton is recognized for his distinctive entrance accompanied by the tune "One Step Beyond" by Madness. Fitton's unique path led him from a career as a funeral director to becoming a professional darts player.

Thriving in the BDO

Fitton made his debut at Frimley Green, where he encountered a first-round loss to Welshman John Burton at Embassy 2003. The year 2004 showcased an intense battle, as he narrowly fell in a 4-5 set match against the eventual winner, Andy Fordham. Fitton's standout achievement came at Lakeside 2005, where he reached the semifinals but was bested by Raymond van Barneveld in a close 3-5 set encounter. The following years held mixed results, with early round exits in 2006 and 2007, followed by a quarterfinal appearance and a semifinal berth in 2008 and 2009, respectively. In the latter, Fitton faced off against Tony O'Shea.

Fitton clinched the British Classic title in 2004 and came close to a breakthrough on the International Darts League, but Raymond van Barneveld dashed his hopes with a convincing 9-2 set victory.

Notably, in 2009, Fitton secured the Zuiderduin Darts Masters title by defeating Martin Adams 5-2 in the final. During the same tournament, he achieved a remarkable feat by throwing a 9-dart finish against Ross Montgomery, donating the prize money to a charitable cause.

Transition to the PDC

In January 2018, Fitton announced via Facebook his intention to participate in Q-School, aiming to earn a coveted PDC Tour Card. His plan was to continue competing within the PDC, even if he didn't secure the Tour Card, by participating in the Challenge Tour, the second-tier PDC events. Fitton's decision was motivated by his desire to minimize travel due to a hip operation and the subsequent recovery. Given that the majority of PDC tournaments are held in England, this move significantly reduced his travel commitments. Fitton's last BDO match took place at Lakeside 2018, where he exited in the second round with a 1-4 defeat to Glen Durrant.

Darryl Fitton's journey from the BDO to the PDC showcases his resilience and adaptability, making him a notable figure in the world of darts.
